City Tour

Malacca River

Also known as the Malacca River or the Sungai Melaka, the Melaka River is one of the famous tourist destinations in Malaysia. It is known worldwide for its serene beauty, tranquility, and captivating water ripples. It originates from the foothills of Negeri Sembilan, the neighboring state of Malacca.

It passes through the middle of Malacca City and ends in the Malacca Strait. Once known as the ‘Venice of the East’, this Melaka River covers a distance of 10 Km and was a notable entry port for European and Asian traders during the late 16th century.

Melaka River has significant heritage importance and has gained popularity after the steps were followed to revive this beautiful river. Now, the riverside has tidal barrages, restored buildings and bridges, concrete river banks, and beautiful river walkways, all of which make this Melaka River, a treat for travelers.

Dutch Square

The Dutch Square of Melaka is located in Bandar Hilir and is the most famous landmark. The square is surrounded by buildings painted in red, which gives rise to its popular name Red Square. One of the most picturesque points of Malacca, the most prominent building of Dutch Square is Stadthuys.

Built between the 1660s and 1700s, the red buildings are characterized by large windows and wrought iron hedges. The entire area of Dutch Square has vibrant surroundings and can always be seen buzzing with tourists. A major highlight of the Red Square is the Queen Victoria Fountain, standing proudly at its center. The century-old fountain was built in 1901 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria.

The red buildings and surroundings make the Dutch Square a popular place for clicking photographs. It is also popular for souvenir shopping.

Porta De Santiago

Porta de Santiago or Gate of St. James is the sole remaining gateway into the fortress built by the Portuguese when they conquered Malacca in 1511. For many decades, older textbooks and tourist brochures were erroneously called Porta de Santiago A Famosa.

The name A Famosa actually refers to the citadel that the Portuguese built upon capturing Malacca. Immediately after Malacca fell, they used forced labor to build a temporary fort to counter Malay attacks, while they worked on the main fort, which they nicknamed "A Famosa", or officially, the Fortaleza de Malaca, or the Fortress of Malacca. (However the name Fortaleza de Malaca usually refers to the fortification around St Paul's Hill that came after the construction of the initial citadel.) The A Famosa took another five months to build. Due to the heat and insufficient food, many laborers died building the fort. The building material was obtained by dismantling Malay graves, mosques, and other buildings.

Jonker Street

Jonker Street, also popular as the Jonker Walk, is the main street of Chinatown, Melaka. It is popular for the shops selling clothes, antiques, and souvenirs, apart from being a major street food hub. The highlight of Jonker Street is the night market held here every Saturday and Sunday.

The bustling Jonker Street is not just about delicious food, artistic creations, and bargaining, but it also has a number of attractions in and around it. The numerous museums, temples, and mosques, each of them drawing inspiration from all around the world give visitors the perfect reason to not miss out on them. Jonker Street truly depicts the fast, jolly, and rich cultural life of Malaysia and forms a smooth knot between ancient traditions and modern technology.
